Sibs (Something Interesting for Brothers and Sisters)

Student led volunteer project, offering free fun days out for children aged 8 to 12 years old who have a brother or sister with a disability. Activities run monthly on Saturdays (during university term-time) giving children a break and the chance to meet others in similar situations. Further details are on this leaflet. #WeCareToo Animations (experiences of young carers aged 8-15)

Young carers aged 8-15 from across Newcastle have created four x 1 minute animated films to help get greater recognition of young carers and more young carers being identified.

All of the young carers involved in developing the animations receive support from Newcastle Carers.

Financial support while studying at college

Young carers may be eligible for some financial support while studying at college, depending on their household income.

  • Sheffield College offer the 16-19 discretionary support fund - more details including eligibility criteria can be found here. 

  • Longley Park offer the discretionary bursary if household income is below a certain level - more details here.

Sheffield Suicide Support

This site is for anyone who’s having suicidal thoughts or feelings, or who’s worried about someone else. You can use it to search for local and national help, support and information, as well as specific support around bereavement (and there are also learning and training resources).

Healthier Together: South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw

Website providing health advice for parents, young people and pregnant women, and clinical resources to support healthcare professionals. Includes a section on young people’s mental health. The site was peer reviewed by some of the cared-for parents in SYC.

Winston's Wish

Winston’s Wish provides emotional and practical bereavement support to children and young people up to the age of 25, their families and those who care for them:

  • Freephone Helpline team for immediate advice, guidance and support from trained bereavement professionals

  • Information and resources to support a bereaved child or young person on their website

  • Expert advice for those bereaved by suicide, homicide and serious illness and supporting bereaved children with SEND.

  • Training for professionals, resources for schools and specialist publications.

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS)

Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS) is an self-help organisation who work to meet the needs of those bereaved by the suicide of a close relative or friend. Many of their volunteers have themselves been bereaved by suicide. The Sheffield support group meets 1st Wednesday of the month. During the pandemic they’re meeting online – to join, email sheffield@uksobs.org or ring Nick on 07858 290078. Their national helpline is 0300 111 5065. It is open 9am-9pm Monday to Sunday. Amparo: Support for anyone affected by suicide

Amparo (by Listening Ear) provide emotional and practical support to anyone who has been affected by suicide. The service can be 1-1, with family groups, groups of colleagues or peers. During the pandemic, they can offer appointments via video call. Currently available in South Yorkshire. You can self refer to Amparo, refer as an agency, or as a coroner. Anti Bullying Alliance: Free online training course

Research has shown that young carers are a vulnerable group and are significantly more likely to be bullied. This short course will give you a good understanding of Young Carers and Bullying. It takes approximately 15-30 minutes to complete. Their website also contains other information, videos and links to reports around young carers and bullying.

Protecting Young Carers from Bullying: A Guide for Schools, Community Groups and Policy Makers

This guide is aimed at all professionals who work with young people and are therefore likely to come across young carers. This includes those working in a dedicated young carers service, a school, a community group, or in a health or social care setting. The aim of the guide, is to raise the awareness and understanding of the relationship between being a young carer and bullying, in order that proactive steps can be taken to help prevent young carers from being bullied.
